What is Matter?

Matter is a new unifying smart home standard that simplifies how smart devices work together. It helps to futureproof your home by ensuring compatibility across all major smart home ecosystems.

Essentials Matter products require a Matter compatible Smart Home Hub and Thread border router.

How can I control this Downlight?

What are the benefits of Thread compared to Bluetooth?

While you can set up and use the downlight over Bluetooth with the Nanoleaf App, it must be used over Thread to fully utilise its Matter capabilities and connect to other smart home ecosystems.

With Thread, you get the benefits of improved reliabilty, faster speeds, fewer dropped connections, increased range, and lower power consumption. You'll also unlock usage of the Nanoleaf Desktop App and the Screen Mirror feature.

Running Matter over Thread allows you to connect your downlight to your smart home ecosystem, control it with voice commands and gain remote access and additional customization features.

[A Thread border router is required to use Thread, and a smart home hub is required to run Matter over Thread]

What do I need to use it?

A Matter-comptaible smart home hub and a Thread Border Router is required to connect your Matter lights to a smart home ecosystem and for the full set of features and benefits of Matter over Thread.Learn More.- Apple Home: iOS and tvOS 16.5 or newer
- Google Home: Android OS 8.1 or newer, iOS Coming Soon

The bulb can also be used over Bluetooth directly only with the Nanoleaf App, but without the additional benefits of Matter over Thread.

Can multiple bulbs be controlled together?

Yes, you can control multiple devices at the same time with the Group Scene function in the Nanoleaf App. Additionally, you can group devices together for unified control in the app of your smart home ecosystem of choice (ie. Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings).

Can I use this downlight with a traditional dimmer switch?

No. Smart downlights in general are not compatible with traditional dimmer switches, because smart downlights have their own built-in dimming mechanism that may clash with the dimmer switch.

How do I install these Downlights?

Refer to the physical setup section of the user manual. We strongly suggest working with a qualified electrician if you are not familiar with electrical systems.

Great product, and once you meet all the necessary network requirements (IPV6 and a proper thread hub like an apple tv) it works great! I get a little bit of feedback or stutter from time to time when making quick color and intensity changes but overall these work great.

As a professional lighting designer, If i could change one thing would be their blue diode they seem to use a 450-455 wavelenght led, inprefer the 395-400 led which provides a deeper/richer blue almost UV. Still their cyan/blue is nice an rich and bright, their reds and greens are also great, and it puts out a great quality white light.

They just don't work

I've used many different iot products and I've been using other smart down lights for years. I was attracted to nanoleaf because of their passion for colour... But I would be much happier if they were at all passionate about their products working. After countless uninstall/reinstalls, turn off, resets and emails to tech support, I give in. Thelis stuff just doesn't work and it's going back : (

All 4 lights were setup within 5 minutes, just scan the codes and you are ready to go. Super responsive and reliable using thread network.

Satisfied with the Thread/Matter compatibility over rivals

When these were announced last year I was quick to purchase them, and although shipping took its time, I am very happy with the results thus far.

Previously my house was almost entirely LIFX Downlight-based, but these have been acting up with the number on the wifi network and their lack of commitment to future standards like Thread and Matter had me concerned.

On the other hand, Nanoleaf has always proven to be reliable with the few bulbs I had, and as the Thread and Matter standard has become ratified have worked very well in my home.

I have so far converted 16 downlights to Nanoleaf, with a few more to go in the future. Very happy with the stability of the connection, though would prefer a simpler way to update firmware than 1-by-1 when in close proximity. Overall, very happy with the system.
